Philips Lighting: Every single day new technology is been developed and this has really got me thinking about how the next generation will look like. Have you ever imagined a situation whereby you turn on your light bulb and automatically you have access to the internet?

Well, that time is now if you had that thought running through your mind. Philips Lighting has introduced the worlds first LiFi technology that has a high quality LED lighting that also provides a broadband internet connection with the light waves technology. It is said to be the first global lighting company to offer LiFi-enabled luminaries from its existing office lighting portfolio.

In case you do not much about LiFi; it is a two-way high-speed wireless technology which is similar to WiFi but this rather makes use of light waves instead of the traditional radio waves to transmit data. The Lighting’s office luminaires enabled with LiFi technology provides a broadband connection with a worthy speed of 30Mps without even compromising its lighting quality.

How Does The Philips Lighting LiFi Works?

The LiFi technology has an inbuilt luminaire that is equipped with an inbuilt modem that helps regulates the light at speeds that are not predictable to the human eyes. The light is then detected by the LiFi USB dongle/key plugged directly into the port of the laptop or tablet.

The LiFi USB dongle then returns data to the luminaire with the help of an infrared link. This results in double of the quality, and a very robust connection as LiFi has 10,000 times the spectrum of a WiFi connection. The company is now offering customers LiFi-enabled Philips PoweBalance gen2 and Philips LuxSpace downlight luminaires.

The company claims that LiFi technology offers more benefit as compared to WiFi saying it can be used in remote places where radio frequencies may interfere with equipment or where WiFi signals are not reachable or are weak. This can also come in handy in environments that are demanding high security, etc. LiFi technology offers extra security as light cannot pass through solid walls, and a line-of-sight to the light is required to have access to the network.
