Use Google Maps & Apple Maps On The Go Without An Internet Connection

Internet Data bundle can be exceptionally expensive and network providers will often bar messaging and call services from being used over them. You know you can’t use your network provider’s data bundle to FaceTime mom and will instead have to pay the network provider a different call rate. Your network provider’s internet data bundle will allow you browse the internet, post to Facebook, Tweet, or find better still find a place on a map. If you are using a small internet data bundle and equally trying to conserve bandwidth usage, the maps application is one place you can cut back. If you are use either Google Maps or Apple Maps, here is a little trick to use it offline.

Please note that this trick works only for a predefined destination i.e. you know where exactly you are going before you leave the office or house and disconnect from a WiFi network.

Google Maps

Google Maps has an offline mode that allows you save an area of a map offline. It also covers a reasonably large area and you can as well zoom in down to street level if you really want to. To add an offline area all you need to do is, open the Google Maps app, click on the hamburger icon close to the top left and select “Offline Areas”. Tap the plus (+) button and select the exact area you want to download. If you have selected an area that is too large to be downloaded offline, Google Maps will inform you of it and ask you to zoom in. After that, Name the map and download it. You can always access it when you are on the go without needing to switch on your internet data plan.

Apple Maps

Apple Maps don’t’ have an offline mode of any kind but if you tell it the exact place where you want to go, the app will preserve the route information, map and all, when you open it the next time. This comes with one caution that Apple Maps must be able to find a path for where you want to go. It’s far less flexible more than Google Maps.

Now open Apple Maps from your device, select where you would like to go, and where you will be leaving from. Apple Maps will show you the different paths available. Select your preferred one and make sure it loads completely. You can now exit from the app, turn off your WiFi connection, and be on your way.

We’ll state this one more time; this trick only works for a planned trip. Just imagine the people in The Hills have Eyes. In that situation they would not be able to use this hack after they got lost. Hope this helps.
