Add A Custom Screen Resolution In Windows 10

Windows allows you select your display’s resolution from a quite long list of resolution settings that you can choose from. Back in Windows 7 you had one recommended setting and one really low setting for your display and you could as well select other settings on the resolution slider in Control Panel section. Windows 10 give you countless options but if it isn’t listing the perfect resolution for a connected display, or it isn’t listing the one you want to use, here is how you can add it.

Open the Settings app and go to the Display tab. Click Advanced Settings and scroll down to the very bottom of the advanced settings screen. Click on “Display adapter properties”.

It will then open the properties for the display adapter. In the Adapter tab, click on “List all modes” button. This option will open a different window listing all the resolution that your display can support. Select your desired resolution and click “Ok” followed by “Apply” on the properties window.

The resolution which you have selected will be applied and you will always be given the usual option to revert back to your previous resolution if you don’t like the one you selected. If you are using Windows 7, you won’t have the settings app to go and will therefore use the Control Panel app.

In Control Panel app, move to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\Screen Resolution now click Advance Settings. This will now open the Display Adapter’s setting. All the other process will remain unchanged, now click on “List all modes” button on the Adapter pane, select the exact resolution type you want and apply it.

It is important to state that you can’t set a resolution that your adapter doesn’t support. It’s a hardware limitation that prevents this and not your operating system. This will be useful if you have connected more than one display and one of them isn’t displaying in the correct resolution.
