Step To Disable “Press Home To Unlock” On your iOS 10 Device

Touch ID enables iOS device owners to unlock their devices without the need of entering a short or long passcode. It also prevents anyone from memorizing your password simply by watching at you while entering it repeatedly. The only problem with this unlock pattern is that even if you simply press the Home button to wake the device, let’s say you want to check what time it is; the device unlocks immediately. With newer and upcoming iOS 10 devices, the Touch ID is even faster so it takes very little to unlock your device when you actually don’t want to.

iOS 10 has got a way to combat that problem by having you actually press the Home button if you really want to go to your home screen. Touching your thumb to the home button will still unlock the device, but you don’t go past the lock screen. The “Slide to unlock” message will be replaced with “Press Home To Unlock”. Many iOS device owners may welcome this feature, but if you are having trouble adjusting to this new pattern to unlock your device and get to the home screen, here is how you can disable it.

To disable it “Press Home To Unlock”, go to Settings app and navigate to General > Accessibility > Home Button and turn On the “Rest Finger To Unlock” option.

The Default For Unlocking IOS 10 Device

Though by default, you will need to press the Home button twice to have your iOS 10 device unlocked. The first time you press it, the screen wakes up and you will see “Press home to unlock” option. A padlock icon in the status bar will show you whether the device is locked or unlocked. If you don’t get to press the Home button, but you keep your finger on it, the device will unlock automatically, the padlock icon will disappear, and the lock screen message will also be replaced with “Press home to open”. Once you press the home button a second time, you’ll be taken to your home screen.

Unlocking An iOS 10 Device With The Rest Finger To Unlock Enabled

With the “Rest Finger to Unlock” option turned On, you can actually wake your device by just pressing the Home button. The device will automatically detect your fingerprint and unlock the device with just a single press of the Home button i.e. exactly the same way it worked in iOS 9.

Screen Lock Status In iOS 10

If you are having trouble trying to figure out when the screen is locked or when it is unlocked, the status bar is where you can tell for sure. If the screen is actually locked, a padlock icon will be displayed. When the screen is unlocked, i.e. as soon as the device recognizes your fingerprint, the padlock icon will automatically change to an unlocked padlock. This icon quickly disappears, so that there will be nothing in the status bar. If you didn’t see any icon visible, then it means the device is unlocked. Pressing the home button will only open the device and also it will take you to your device home screen. Pressing the wake/sleep button will sleep the display and also lock your device again.
