Enable A Download Save Prompt In Microsoft Edge On Windows 10

Windows 10 actually wants to make Microsoft Edge browser everyone’s default browser and it is trying everything possible to make that happen notwithstanding if users really want it or not. The browser isn’t that bad but it’s certainly a work-in-progress with the several features, add-ons being the key one, yet to make an appearance on the stable release of Windows 10 builds. It also has it flukes one of which is that the Edge browser doesn’t ask you if you would want to run or save a file when you click a “Download” button just like we have it in Internet Explorer. But instead the download simply starts and you can only pause or cancel it.

If you had wanted to save a file to a different path or location i.e. not in the default downloads location or folder, then you will later have to move it once the file has finished downloading. If you would like Edge to prompt you before the download begins and ask you weather you would want to save a file, and where to save it also, you can actually get it to do so with a little change in the Windows register.

By default, this is what you will actually get when you click a download button in Microsoft Edge.

Now open the Windows registry. Type “regedit” in the search bar and right click on it and run as administrator. Next navigate to the following path. If you don’t see the “Downloads” key, you can go ahead and create it from Edit>New>Key.

Inside this key, you have to create a new DWORD entry from Edit> New> DWORD (32-bit) value name it “EnableSavePrompt”. Set the value to “1”.

Now close the registry and return to Edge browser. Try to download and you will see the following prompt appear at the bottom. For as long you don’t respond to this prompt, the download will not begin.

The prompt looks very familiar because it is the exact same one that appears in Internet Explorer 11 when you click on a download button. Edge browser doesn’t have a user interface setting to enable it just (yet) but the ability to have the prompt appear is certainly there. Anytime you feel the prompt is getting irritating, all you have to do is simply rest the value of the DWORD entry you just made to “0” and it will stop appearing.
